Isn't it a matter of having multiple phones? or multiple apps on the same phone?
I used to assume they all drove for both Uber and Lyft, but it seems they only use one. I have seen (I am in NYC) Juno and Uber combo a lot but not Uber and Lyft combo. What gives?
What you are observing is true. Drivers do not regularly use both Uber and Lyft. Reason? Incentives. Both Uber and Lyft, in the name of building up loyalty, give incentives for sticking to one service. For example, if they give x number of rides in a week, they get an additional bonus. If they accept 10 ride requests in a row, you get a bonus.
This does not mean drivers aren't signed up for both Uber and Lyft. It's just that they stick to one of them, and use the other just to increase coverage, i.e. find more rides from other rideshare networks.
As an example, a driver may ue Uber as the primary app, drive with it all day. Then he hits a lull and stop getting requests. That's when he pulls out the Lyft app and see if he would get a request.
