This would ding the driver so hard. They wait in the queue for so long and they would get a $3 ride from one terminal to another. Ha! You'd also incur an airport usage fee.  I don't think this is a good idea.

I heard about O'Hare having some issues with their people movers. I thought they are providing continuous shuttle buses.  I didn't realize there restricted hours. https://www.flychicago.com/ohare/ServicesAmenities/services/Pages/ATS.aspx

The O’Hare Airport Transit System (ATS or “people mover) is closed 24/7 to finalize modernization efforts and expansion of the sytem.

In order to maintain a travel connection between all of O’Hare’s terminals and parking lots, the CDA will operate shuttle buses to transport passengers and employees between terminals (Terminals 1, 2, 3 and 5) and from the terminals to each economy parking lot (Lots E, G, H); the Multi-Modal Facility, where rental cars are housed; and the Metra O’Hare Transfer st…

The buses will operate continuously to ensure prompt and reliable service while the ATS is closed.

If connecting between domestic Terminals 1, 2 & 3, you DON’T have to take the shuttle buses, you can walk. Simply follow in-airport signage.

The CDA is committed to providing a quick and reliable bus shuttle service as the ATS modernization is finalized. The new ATS is scheduled to open Fall 2019.

So much for the commitment to provide reliable service. Do they really close at 8:30PM? I can't imagine that to be true.

The driver may not get dinged on such a short trip. They'd probably be put back in the queue for such a short trip. I'd say give it a shot.  Tip the driver handsomely.

I assume you are looking for a backup plan. I think Uber or Lyft may be a good backplan for you. Yes, I think it'll work.

I heard from a passenger Lyft did. It allow her to book a trip which it deemed too long so she booked it on Uber, the trip was only 20 miles but perhaps she was plugging in wrong state by accident. If a system uses same analogy and tells a passenger ride is too short ( though I have never seen that) who knows maybe in airport it may happen. Just put drop off point just outside the airport, inform driver who came to get you that you are changing destination to terminal 5 and tip the driver

I see no reason why you couldn't use Uber/Lyft for this! You might incur some extra airport fees though.
