I thought I heard somewhere that rideshare insurance is a scam. they don't cover anything different.

In many states, it's just a rider (hehe) on your personal policy. The incremental fee isn't too much more. Often just adds more liability insurance.
Also, remember that Uber has its own liability coverage.
