Dial 911 directly from the Uber app. I guess this is a good idea, but if you have your phone one you already, which you do if you are using Uber, then isn't it just as easy to dial from your phone normally? Is this just a PR move by Uber?

"In April, Uber announced that it would be adding a direct way for riders to call 911 within its app in an effort to boost its flagging safety reputation. Today, the company is making that new feature live and fully operational across the US."

Now, what would be cool is if the panic button sent out a message to all the other Uber drivers nearby! Think how fast help could arrive if the uber driver network was utilized effectively.

"in an effort to boost its flagging safety reputation"

Ummm... If you have to add a special button right on your home screen to call 911, that does not make your app look "safer"... If you have so many incidents that that button is a necessity, something is wrong with your service...

right, this seems a little dumb. calling 911 from an iphone is super simple, you don't even have to dial just press "emergency" on your lock screen.

Why would I open the Uber app and search for the 911 button if I was in a real emergency? Total PR stunt by Uber.

I read that soon they will implement the tech to allow the 911 dispatcher to view the callers location. I am pretty sure that just plain calling 911 already does this. I was in a car crash a few weeks back and they knew my location without my having to say it! So looks like Uber's panic button is WORSE than just calling 911
