What is the cost for waiting time?
The Guru Take
It varies based on service and location.
Every rideshare and taxi company has different wait time charges. These charges also vary depending on location.
It is also important to note that traditional taxi companies and rideshare companies charge for waiting time in different ways. Traditional taxi companies only charge wait time rates when the car is moving below a certain speed or is stopped. Rideshare companies, typically, charge for time during the entire duration of the ride whether the car is traveling at 60mph or is stopped.
Different meaning of "Wait time", depending on taxis or rideshares/Uber
Traditionally, the "wait time" for taxis meant the time the taxicab "waited" while the meter was running. This can be assessed while the car was stopped, say at a red light, and/or driing slowly, say under 5mph, in traffic. Taxi prices are comprised of distance charge and this "wait time charges."
With Uber and other rideshares, the "wait time" means the time the driver waits for the passenger to arrive at the pickup location. Usually, the riders have x minutes (currently 2 with Uber) to show up, and if they don't, there will be "wait time charges" assessed for every minute.
