Other Services?
Have you used our Fare Calculator to see which services are available in your area? I would recommend searching your route and then choosing another company that may be more reliable. If other rideshare companies have yet to come to your area, then I would try calling your local taxi company and seeing if they would be able to work out a discount as you would be a repeat customer.
Lack of drivers does not necessarily cause them to cancel requests.
When there are only a few drivers, one of two things can happen. One is that a surge (or Prime Time) is triggered which raises prices and makes drivers happy. The other is what you are experiencing, which is that the drivers become pickier on which ride to accept. If you do not see a surge even though there is a gap betwee supply and demand, you may want to provide this feedback to Lyft. (The surge pricing can help drivers from cancelling.)
There is usually a reason driver cancels. How is your rider rating? Are you making extremely long trips (which warns the customer)?
Another thing you could do is to try Scheduled Rides (article here). While these rides are not guaranteed (see here), the fact that you are a Scheduled Ride will encourage drivers to accept your request. This is because people who schedule rides are less likely to cancel, take longer trips, and often to airports which are considered as lucrative by many.

There are plenty of drivers out at 5:30. (I am a driver.) You are probably getting cancelled because your passenger rating is low. During times when the drivers have pickings, they would ignore and do not accept rides from low-rated riders.
...or are they accepting and canceling later? If that's the case... well, I don't know.
