I think you are missing the point. This is for drivers who WANT to do something extra to earn extra money. No one is making them sell things but if they happen to create awesome beer koozies and can sell them to their riders for extra cash then more power to them!
I recently took a trip too NYC and hated driving in/out/around the city. It truly is ten times worse than any other form of transportation in major cities right now, so much anger, so slow, everyone in their own little bubble.
My money says this will never really take off. A lot of hype right now, companies are trying to push it just like segways but nah, scooter sharing is dumb.

I read a lot of negative stuff about Lyft too. Maybe it is less because they are smaller?

Do you have any trades? Good at crafts? CD's? etc? I have seen drivers sell their creations before.
I dont get the big thing between contractors or employees? Are you paid more one way or the other? Like why does it matter so much?!

yes, i couldnt agree more. I have already read some articles on the issues of sccoters taking up sidewalk space and being left against establishments.
