Sharing taxis are usually a good idea to save costs.
Yes, you can share. Often the drivers can even take you to multiple destinations as long as the meter is running. So it can become very economical when sharing a cab. In some cases, there are times you can be charged a fee for each additional passengers, but it is nominal compared to the trip. ($1~2)
In some cases, during busy periods, some taxi pickup locations in heavily regulated areas (say LaGuardia airport in NYC), you are forced to share cabs and each group of passengers (determined by drop-offs) would have its own fare.
With rideshares, you are charged one fee for the entire group, assuming everyone can fit in the vehicle requested.
