How much do Uber and Lyft drivers make in Los Angeles?

Uber and other rideshare drivers set their own hours and can work as much or as little as they want, as long as it is permitted by law.  Hence, how much drivers make depends on how much they drive.  Drivers keep the majority of the fare and the rest goes to the rideshare company that collects commissions and booking fees.

In Los Angeles, CA, Uber drivers make about $16.93 per hour before expenses, compared to the national average of $16.02, according to a survey including 995 drivers (other cities/source). When considering expenses, as a rule-of-thumb, many drivers use $1.00 per mile as their net profit.

Additional info:

  • According the CityMetrics most recent week for LA - September 7-13, 2015, the mean weekly earnings from sampled drivers was $257. The average number of trips was 38. And the average earnings per day was $64. (Ryder Pearce - April 20, 2016)
  • Really depends if there is some type of event actually going on or not. It's pretty hard to say depending on how far the person has to go or how many people. One of my close friends does it for fun and generally makes 20-40$ a night when doing it. Not sure how much you would make if you do it full time however. (Anna A. Lacroix, Jan 2, 2015)
