I think it depends where you are. I don't drive anymore but I used to drive for both, and I think a lot of drivers do that, which means they should be kind of equally reliable. As a rider I tend to open both apps and see which one is closer. In my area it can really go either way.
I would recommend installing both apps first, and creating accounts. Then you should be all set. Most places that are at least semi-populated in this country have pretty good rideshare coverage, but having both apps ups your chances.
They are both dependable, as in once you order a ride and it is accepted, the driver will show up. But most places have more uber drivers if that is what you mean.
