I want to make you aware of something about ride-share insurance coverage which I recently discovered.

How I learned of this... I was driving ride-share for Lyft one Sunday and had a minor accident with a passenger in the car.

Previously, I had changed my insurance to Progressive because I wanted to be responsible in this ride-share endeavor.

  • I was previously paying about $750, every 6 months for a GEICO policy on two vehicles, without ride-share.
  • I switched to Progressive because I wanted rideshare coverage on one of the two vehicles.

My Progressive policy jumped to ~ $2,000 every 6 months. This is about $300 in my budget to make those payments.

What I thought I was getting:

  1. Coverage that would cover the cost difference between the ride-share company insurance deductible of $2,500 and my personal policy deductible of $500.
  2. Coverage beyond the ride-share policy coverages to match the higher coverages on my personal policy.

After the accident, I opened a claim with Progressive. I found that I could repair the damage myself as it was so minor.

I closed all claims, both with Progressive and the ride-share insurer.

Today, I got a SHOCKING letter in the mail from Progressive which specifically stated that they were under no obligation to offer me coverage while working in any phase of the ride-share endeavor unless I had no rider/product delivery in the queue or were actively delivering a passenger/product.

Here is where all of this is enumerated online: https://www.progressive.com/auto/insurance-coverages/rideshare/

From that page:

"By adding ride-share coverage, you can gain protection beyond what's provided by your ride-sharing company's insurance policy." (Progressive…

From that page:

"By adding ride-share coverage, you can gain protection beyond what's provided by your ride-sharing company's insurance policy." (Progressive webpage)

The ONLY protection you get is: Roadside assistance and Rental car reimbursement (about $25/day).

"...your ride-sharing company's insurance policy may offer liability protection while you're waiting to match with a rider, but you're typically on the hook for any physical damage to your car. With Progressive ride-share coverage, your personal auto policy's comprehensive and collision coverage will apply during this phase of a trip in case your vehicle is damaged in a covered incident." (Progressive webpage)

This means that:

IF you have the driver app turned on

BUT you have no passenger in your queue

OR you have no passenger/product in the vehicle at the moment of the accident.

Basically, if you are not actively in process of doing anything ride-share related!

This morning, a Progressive sales agent concurred with all that I have posted here.

So, even though I was trying desperately to be responsible, I was being provided NOTHING for doing so.

I advise that anyone who reads this to be sure that you know what your insurance is providing you and what risks you are taking.

I will be researching this further to see if there in ANY ride-share insurance which does what we all need...
