What is Trust & Safety Fee for Lyft?
The Guru Take
"Trust & Safety Fee" is no more. Now simply called "Service Fee." (Similar to Uber's Safe Rides Fee)
"The Trust & Safety Fee" was a flat fee that was added to every Lyft ride. It was set at $1.00 originally and later raised to $1.50. Lyft claimed this fee covered insurace costs, driver background checks, and other safety measures meant to protect the riders. (Uber also had a similar fee called "Safe Rides Fee.")
Lyft no longer assesses this fee, in part due to the controversies around its legality. It was argued that Lyft was not using this money to cover the said expenses, at least not in its entirety. It was also argued that fees such as insurance and background checks are incurred on a much wider scale and not based on the number of rides driven. Similar claims were made against Uber with its Safe Riders Fee."
The Trust & Safety Fee was replaced by what is now called "Service Fee." Was it just a name change or did they actually replace how the fees were used? No one knows.
