Down time claims post accident

Has anyone here been successful with down time claims after a car crash that was the other drivers fault and their liability is paying for repairs? How did the claim pay? Where you paid as as the car was being repaired, such as weekly, or did the insurance company insist on waiting till car was repaired and then deciding on a settlement? Kinda bites that you have to wait possibly months to get any kind of settlement.
