When I order a Lyft (or Uber), how do I know the car that picks me up will have space for a fold-up wheelchair?
Fold-Up Wheelchair
The Guru Take
Using Uber and/or Lyft with a Wheelchair
Great question! First, I would check to see if your area of travel supports Uber Assist. Uber Assist is a handicap accessible service that is priced the same as UberX. With UberAssist you can be confident that your fold-up wheelchair will fit while not paying any extra for a bigger car. Lyft also has a similar program called "Access Mode".
If UberAssist is not available, I would recommend calling a traditional UberX and once you have been matched with a driver, call or message that driver to ensure they have the space. You could always opt to order an UberXL which would guarantee enough space for your fold-up wheelchair but you would have to pay more for you ride which is not at all desirable. Uber does have a page outlining their policy with assitive devices and they state that they will not deny service becuase of your wheelchair and that the driver is expected to help you if need be!
