How do you get a minivan taxi/Uber/Lyft?
The Guru Take
UberVans in limited cities. Otherwise, you cannot specify. Some UberXLs are minivans.
In most markets, including the US, you cannot specifically request a minivan such as Toyota Sienna or Honda Odyssey. Minivans or full-sized vans can only be requested in cities where UberVANs are offered. (see list here)
With that said, the minivans qualify for UberXL, so when you order an UberXL, you may see a minivan pull up to pick you up. What a treat! They can often fit 7 or 8 passengers, depending on how the seats are configured. (Be careful though. Drivers are only required to accept up to 6 passengers, not including themselves.)
Minivans are a popular choice for cost conscious drivers, as they have low gas mileage and can earn them more money as UberXL vehicle.

With Uber, an UberX car will typially be a passenger car that can hold up to 4 passengers plus the driver. An Uber XL will typically be a mini-van or SUV that can hold up to six passengers plus the driver. You cannot specifically request a mini-van, however odds are that whatever vehicle arrives when you request an XL will be able to accomodate. Same is true for a Lyft XL.
Minivans are awesome for UberX. They has great gas mileage and they qualify for UberXL where you can earn more money. They are WIN-WIN....however, not many are around for some reason.
If you call a local taxi company, they will dispatch you a minivan as the availability allows. If you are at an airport, just ask the guy at the stand, and they will get you one. In cities where the rates are regulated (think taximeter), the rates are the same!
Everyone talks about how UberX is so much cheaper than taxis, but this is one instance where taxi is cheaper than Uber. It's when you compare Taxi Minivan to UberXL.
Go taxi! (for once)
