Why did Uber charge me a cancellation fee when the driver cancelled?
The Guru Take
"No show" is the most likely reason
Most likely answer is a “No show.” The driver cancelled the ride because he or she could not find you.
When the driver shows up at the pickup location and you are not there, the driver will wait for five minutes. After that, he or she can initiate a cancellation and the cancellation fee (usually $5 for UberX) will be assessed on the rider.
Potential Scam: There is a known scam where the driver would try to collect cancellation fees without giving you a ride. They do this by either pretending to not find you or turning your phone off. Here’s a discussion of it: Driver Scam Equation - Collecting No-shows
