The cancellation charges in Uber are totally absurd because the company is charging us for the cancellations done by the drivers as well. Why will I make a payment for a ride that has been denied by the driver?

Not possible for you to be charged incorrectly.  Here's the rules:

    1.  If YOU cancel after 2 minutes, YOU are charged a cancellation fee.  Remember the rider has already started their trip to pick you up.

    2.  If the driver arrives at the pick up location you entered and you don't show up after 5 minutes, then the driver cancels as a "no show" and you are charged a cancellation fee.  THIS IS THE ONLY WAY the driver can do ANYTHING that will result in you being charged.

If the driver cancels at any point, OTHER than arriving without you showing up, you are NOT charged!

Remember, YOU are responsible to make SURE the pick up location YOU entered is correct!!! It's always best to step outside to the area where you plan to be picked up BEFORE requesting the ride so YOUR phone's GPS will pin you to the correct location.

Remember, it is NOT uber's fault if you request a ride to the wrong location. It is NOT the Uber system that locates …

I have had drivers just drive around in circles a block from me before to run out the clock until I cancelled. How is that fair?!

The only way you're charged for a cancellation is if you have let the 5 minute wait period lapse. Why shouldn't you be charged for that? That's the policy. On top of waiting five minutes, Uber doesn't pay the driver the full life changing $5 either, they take 25% of it and the driver gets $3.75. You don't want to get cancelled on, be ready to go, then you'll never get cancelled on.

Once you request a ride and are matched with a driver, he or she is on their way to pick you up, if they cancel for any reason before pick-up, you won't be charged. However, once you order the ride, you have two minutes to cancel since the driver is on the way, if you change your mind after that and cancel yourself, you'll be charged the $5 because the driver is probably half way to your location.

So let me be sure. I would not be charged if the driver cancels on me *before* showing up at the location. Is that correct?

Let’s assume I’m doing everything correctly on my part. Out on the curb, specified location, and ready to go. There is no way I would be charged the cancellation fee if the driver cancels?

Nope, nothing, as long as you're ready to go before 5 minutes, it's all good. Now if you run into a driver who waited 5 minutes and you're coming out of the building and he cancels looking at you, he's an A hole.

Other posters are correct that drivers cancelling a trip before showing up will not trigger a cancellation fee. However, there are ways they manipulate ans scam you:

    • The driver shows up and claims he was there. Then triggers a “no show” cancellation. He or she can do that after 5 minutes.
    • The driver shows up, claims to have picked you up, and then immediately cancels. This technically starts the rider but it completes it immediately.
    • The driver accepts a ride, calls or messages you to ask you for your destination. Then cancels it. This won’t trigger a cancellation charge, at least I don’t think so, but this allows them to cherry pick a ride.

None is worth the life changing $3.75 that the driver gets.

Yeah, but the underlying goal is to cherry pick the rides.

Cherry pick before you accept the ride, pay attention to pick-up location, 45+, surge rate, pax rating etc.

            Amen to that.

Destination cherry picking happens a lot at airports.

A few hundred L.A. veterans got deactivated because of that, cherry pick and cancel if it's a shortie. Got to be careful about that.

    Wait, is this right?

The rider has five minutes to cancel. Or was it 2? I think that clock starts after a driver has accepted the ride.

And if the driver cancels while you wait, then you shouldn’t be charged the cancellation fee.  Of course the exception is if the driver is already at the pick-up location and you aren’t there.

Pax has two minutes to cancel after ordering a ride. Once we get to the pickup, pax has five minutes to get in the car and they'll be paying a waiting fee between minute 2 to 5.

Don't request a ride that you're not sure you are going to take. It is a waste of the drivers time to get to your location and you're not there. Can you really blame the driver for collecting the cancellation fee?

I have always wondered this too, it actually made me stop using Uber for awhile because it pissed me off so much. I eventually would always get my fee back from Uber but it took so much of my time going back and forth with them. It is liek a gamble when you order a ride to see if you will just have a driver take your cancellation fee... GRRR

Did you REALLY have the correct address in your Uber app for the pick up location?  Because unless a driver arrives at your location, it is NOT possible to collect a cancellation fee and he must SIT STILL AND WAIT five minutes.  Also, if you arrive, sit for a minute and then start driving, the APP will generally start the trip with the assumption that you forgot to start it!!!  So, driving around to avoid picking you up WILL NOT WORK.  (at least not with the current version of the app)

Driver makes $3.75 on a cancellation after waiting 5 minutes for you to get in the car. Be ready to go, no problems. Trust me, they rather give you the ride than cancel. They drove at least 5 minutes to pick you up.
