Can multiple people share one Uber/Lyft account?
The Guru Take
Frowned upon, but there are options
Having a verified identity is a big deal in the ridedshare world, where the identity leads to trust and trust leads to safety and accountability. This is a big reason drivers claim Ubers are safer than regular taxis, because the riders are known people. (where as if they hail someone from the streets, they can be anyone.)
Hence, Uber does frown upon and it goes against the terms for multiple people to share the same account. Also, it's critical to have a cell phone associated with the account so the drivers can contact you. Unless you two have the same phone numbers (which is unlikely), this can pose a problem.
Two exceptions:
- Uber, in US, does offer a "family share plan", where the payment information and history are shared across multiple members of the family.(https://www.uber.com/newsroom/family-profiles/)
- You can dispatch a ride to your friends and family, from your phone. (Can I call Uber for a family member?)
For drivers, this is definitely prohibited, of obvious reasons.
Comments
It's free to sign up. Why not just have multiple accounts? I feel like there's more trouble than its worth. Like, why have one phone number being shared across all of you.
Maybe a credit card thing? Like kids don't have credit cards, so parents want one person to pay.
Yeah, but can't kids just enter their credit card information?
BTW, are kids even allowed on rideshares.
