There's always been a misunderstanding because everyone was under the impression that "rideshares" with "sharing" and all would ease traffic congestions in the cities. Less people owning cars, driving cars, parking on the streets, etc. etc. So while people in cities like New York observed something obvious, i.e. traffic increasing, no one really believed them.
Researches and survey are starting to give a clearer picture. I am not sure if this particular one is definitive, as it is based more on surveys, but it is a good data point.
