"Shared ride" refers to the carpooling option for rideshare services like Uber and Lyft. i.e. UberPool and LyftLine.
This is an ride option where the algorithm attempts to group passengers who are going in the same general direction, and drivers pick multiple passengers for a single ride. This means that the passengers end up sharing the same cabin and hence may take longer to get to their destinations. The rides are often cheaper for the passengers as a result.
