If I am the first pickup on a shared ride (e.g. UberPool or Lyft Line), where in the vehicle should I sit?

Ok, when I call an Uber and it’s empty, do I sit in the front with the driver, or in the back alone?

The back. Where normal people sit. Whichever side you want.
Actually... I have heard for females (or anyone for that matter), you may want to sit behind the driver. There's been examples of where the drivers would pull up against a wall, blocking the passenger side door from opening. Then they would attack from the other side. Scary.
Are you asking whether you are supposed to sit in the front seat?
Umm, wherever you wanna sit. Just not on the driver.
Many pool rides may not even make another stop, so you might as well be comfortable.
Not in the front !!
Sit in the backseat. Right smack in the middle. Make sure to insist that the couple that got in after you "take both the window seats." Then mumble, "You are welcome."
