The Guru Take
UberX may be tight. UberXL will be more comfortable.
Just as other posters stated, UberX will most likely fit a family of four with a few suitcases. It may be slightly tight depending on how much you packed, as every seat will be taken up by a person and there won't be much room in the cabin for extra luggage. Hence it will come down to whether your suitcases can all fit in the trunk. The carry-ons can often fit inside the cabin, where they can be placed by the feet or on the lap. (I didn't say it'd be comfortable!)
As one poster puts it, if you are not in a hurry, you can try ordering an UberX and see if the car assigned to you would work. The moment the driver accepts, you will be able to see the car type, at which point you can make a judgement call. You can even have the car arrive and try fitting the luggage in the car. If it doesn't fit, then you can cancel, apologize to the driver, and request a larger car. (Remember that there will most likely be a cancellation fee of $5.00.) This hassle may be worth it since UberXL does cost much more than an UberX.
Some general guidelines below:
In terms of the choices you have, there are basically two capacity options with Uber and Lyft (at least in general).
- Sedan - Provided by services like UberX, UberBlack, and Lyft, these can hold up to 4 passengers, and have trunk space. Trunk space for 2-3 large suitcases or 3-4 medium/small suitcases. Remember that if you have less than 4 passengers, you can stow luggage in the unoccupied seats. (within reason)
- SUVs - Provided by services like UberSUV, UberXL, and Lyft Plus, these cars can hold up to 6 passengers (not counting the driver), and have trunk space for luggage. You can fit 4-5 large suitcases or 5-6 medium suitcases.

Comments
Think Camry and Taurus. You are probably okay with UberX for a family of four.
What did you drive to the airport? A sedan? Just imagine one extra person (the driver). Did all the suitcases fit in the trunk?
Edited: I first typed “UberXL”. My bad
