Why do people say "call an Uber" and pick up their phone and order a Lyft?

I've heard this so many times, people will say theyre going to call an Uber for us to go somewhere and then the car shows up and it's a Lyft. Why didn't they just say call a Lyft?

my friends do this all the time, it's just a way of saying "lets get a ride". you know how you say "let me grab a kleenex" when your nose is running? it's like that.. but for uber. kleenex is a brand, the proper name is tissue!

I heard someone say, "Call an uber" and we all laughed at him until he decided to call a Lyft.

I bet Lyft wanted everyone to say, "Let's get a Lyft", then Uber came around and ruined it for everyone.

"uber" now has become a verb, just like "google" when you search for something.

NOt sure. Lyft is usually cheaper anyways!! They always give me 10% off rides. Uber NEVER does that for me.

It's normal I think because Uber is on the news a lot more than any other rideshare so when people think of taking a rideshare they automatically assume uber even though there are so many other options out there

People use Uber because it is more commonly understood and captured the market first. The fact that Lyft gets called shows that Lyft is still managing to attract people to them without the utter name recognition that Uber has.

The reason people usually choose Lyft is that the drivers are often friendlier, the fare is slightly lower, and in some markets, the cars are required to be newer.

Aren't all Lyft drivers also Uber drivers anyways.  It's all commodity in my opinion.

No, not all Lyft drivers drive for Uber. Personally, I do not drive for Uber and do not really trust the company enough to want to give them my personal information. I know other people who also do not drive for Uber. While it may be busier, it depends on your reasons for choosing Lyft in the first place as your platform.
