This article title really pisses me off. "9 times you should tip your Uber driver". THIS is why riders DO NOT TIP. The title should read " why you should always tip your Uber driver". Riders are constantly getting the notion that they have an out to not tip. I know this article means well but a tip should be expected UNLESS the driver sucks.

I find the riders that tip the most are the ones that you have a conversation with. A few times I've received a tip from riders that say hello and goodbye and not another word. Anyone under the age of 32 are not good tippers.
I've found in the past 8 mths my tips have increased. I stopped driving the bar people unless its a holiday. They tend not to tip. I drive a lot of people to the airport so trips for me are 45+ min. maybe thats the difference. However a friend of mine drives same area, same type of people and doesnt get tipped often. He is a male. Not sure that has a lot to do with it but I think it helps being a female. I dont mean that I wear low cut shirts, flirt, etc... I am on the older side (54). I just really listen to them. Most mens wives probably dont listen to them about their job. They are people from other countries that are not used to tipping. Most days all but 1 of my riders tip. I finally hit 100% last weekend for the 1st time. Since Dec. 31st I have one day that I received no tips. I usually average over $75.00 per day in tips. I've learned when driving business people they either want total quiet to do work or they like to talk about their work. I ask questions about what type of work they do, how they got started, do they like living here verses their home country. Sometimes they talk about their family. I try to be interested in what they tell me (most times they are interesting). I let them do most of the talking. I compliment them on how hard they work, how smart they are, etc... It seems to work.
I think a lot depends on what market you are in and what type of riders you get. There is always going to be those cheap riders that no matter what you do they are not tipping. I also read some articles on the psychology of tipping most are geared towards servers but there a few things I've used and it did help. You can find those articles on Google. Read a few, try it, it cant make things worse:)
