Careem is a global ridesharing company with headquarters located in Dubai. The company was started by two consultants in 2012 and was originally a website used for online car bookings. Since then, the company has evolved to become a car booking service for everyday use. The service is known for operating in countries where there are limited public transportation options and much of the population does not own a vehicle. Ground transportation in the middle east is unreliable, so Careem was founded to fill that gap.
Careem provides both on-demand and scheduled pickups for passengers in services that range from economy to luxury.
Careem currently operates in over 80 cities and in 13 countries across the world. The company serves markets in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia. Some notable cities where Careem operates include Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Beirut, Dammam, Dhahran, Doha, Dubai, Jeddah, Karachi, Khobar and Riyadh – totaling over 100,000 users.
Careem’s biggest market is Saudi Arabia, where women are not allowed to drive, but are permitted to ride in cabs with male drivers. This has been a concern for many women as the cabs are known for not being safe. Careem prides itself on being especially safe for these women. Later this year, the laws are expected to change and women may be allowed to act as on-demand chauffeurs for Careem and Uber, which also operates in Saudi Arabia.
