Some cities are easy to get around. Some cities are not. There are cities conducive to walking, cycling, public transportation, or driving. Walking is a great way to get around, but not all cities are created equal for walkability. If you find yourself in a city with terrible walkability, you can always turn to RideGuru to find the best way to get around.

In general, we have found that Southern cities in the United States tend to have lower walkability rankings. Here are the top ten cities that are the least pedestrian friendly.

Fayetteville, North Carolina is the number one least walkable city in the U.S. with a low walk score of 20.4 out of 100 on Zillow. In 2007, only 1.7% of the population walked to work, but that percentage grew to 5.4% by 2012. If trends keep up, the city might be a walkable city within the century.

Chesapeake, Virginia is the second least walkable city in the United States. You might not be able to walk very far, but there is a lot to do.

Winston-Salem, North Carolina has a growing retiree population, who would like to have more walkability. It’s not just the retired population who crave foot traffic, the whole town would like some as well.

Charlotte, North Carolina is one of the least walkable cities in the country. There are several neighborhoods and areas within the city where residents enjoy getting places by foot but most of the city is not conducive to walking just yet. Things might be changing, though.

Montgomery, Alabama has been home to some very important historical events. In recent years, Alabama is putting money into creating sidewalks and bike lanes for people, but the city has a way to go before it can be considered a walkable city.

Jacksonville, Florida is a huge sprawling city with lots to do and see, but you will need a car to go do and see. The city is not made for walking, and the public transportation scene is pretty subpar as well.

Nashville-Davidson, Tennessee is trying to make their city more walkable because millennial home buyers are demanding it. The city is starting to create areas with walkable options for people but still has a ways to go!

Durham, North Carolina continues the poor walkability trend for the state of North Carolina with a score of 28.4.

Greensboro, North Carolina is number nine with a low walk score of 28.8 out of 100 on Zillow. The state has a great deal of cities in the list of cities with poor walkability.

Gilbert, Arizona is a fast growing suburb of Phoenix. Though downtown has decent walkability, the rest of the city does not.

Walking is a great way to get out and about. Many cities are striving to increase the ability to walk around and use public transportation, but the change is slow. RideGuru is a great place to go when you find yourself in need of a way to get around. If you can’t walk, you’re not out of luck!
