Uber Shared Rides

Uber is finally bringing back their shared ride option after stopping the service in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Branded under a new name, UberX Share, the revamped UberPool service will first be available in Miami. As we all know, Uber’s prices have skyrocketed recently, so bringing back a cheaper carpooling option may make taking an Uber a more popular transportation option again.

“We are launching an Uber shared pool product,” Khosrowshahi said. “We have been investing for years in a high-capacity product, which is looking more and more attractive as it relates to a unit economic basis, where that can bring the price significantly lower.”

Not only has Uber rebranded the name of their shared ride service, they have also changed how it works. With an UberX Share ride, you’ll only ever ride with one other person (in addition to the driver) during your trip. As we are still battling Covid-19, everyone in the car must also wear a mask, even if they are vaccinated. If you are matched with another rider, you will be given a 5% discount on your ride as well as Uber Cash.

How UberX Share Works

1. Request

Open the Uber app, enter your destination, and scroll down to the UberX Share ride option.

2. Ride

The app will try to match your car with other riders heading your way. Get a 5% discount and Uber Cash if you’re matched with a co-rider.

3. Arrive

Once you arrive at your destination, hop out and rate your driver!

The news of shared rides being offered again is very welcomed by the rideshare community. Lyft brought back their shared ride service in July after also stopping the popular ride option in March 2020. Very similar to Uber, Lyft riders also have to wear masks and will only ever be partnered with one other passenger.

Uber has yet to state on when it will expand their UberX Share service to other cities but keep an eye out on your Uber app as they do plan to expand!
