  Trying to follow the math.  So do you make $24 an hour?  Is that what it comes down to?

  I heard from a friend Uber driver this interesting tidbit.  Drivers definitely lose money on certain rides, and a good portion of all the rides end up losing them money.  You just have to make up for those loses by making sure to have good rides, that are longer and maybe under surge.

  ...and this is why the seasoned drivers who can cherry pick (or at least know when, where, and how to work) can make good profits but others don't.

  Uber and Lyft are great, so I commend them for that, but I agree that the way they bullied and played the game was just not right.  Didn't bother to follow the regulations knowing that people would look away and figured it'd take the market years to react or do anything about it (they were right).

  sad really.

   5 years ago in  Why don't cities limit the number of Uber drivers? I keep hearing about how there are too many and causing congestion.

  Are we bringing back the medallion system?  All that hoopla for the last few years and Ubers will just be taxis all over again?   Then we will repeat the same mistake we did with the taxi industry.

  It was like the purge of the taxi drivers, because if this is the direction we are going, Uber drivers will just be medallion/license carrying workers just like taxi drivers were.

  I think Uber entertained this idea in the past.  However, they deemed it too difficult to implement. Imagine the complexity in the ordering process?  How does a pax request a higher rated drivers and pay/offer more money?   What if they aren't available?  Do they have to specifically have to ask for cheaper and worse drivers if they wanted a barain?

  I think there are many challenges:

  • Rules were quickly set up at public places like airports and city sidewalks where you are not allowed to ride them.  I don't know how these companies plan to solve that but they'll probably just ignore the rules until the authorities give up.
  • Batteries don't last that long.  Once the battery is dead, it becomes a brick.
  • It's dangerous for others around.  
  • They sort of suck in the rain.

  I know there are people who are against tips in general or just the concept of it. I can see their argument on how the rates should be set to cover all costs and it shouldn't be pushed down to the passengers, etc.  Then the drivers argue they aren't getting paid.  Then people say that's not their problem, maybe it's Uber's.

  However, I think everyone is forgetting one important thing about tipping.  It's meant to be there to reward the person for a job well done.  This is why you see it most often in the service industry.

  Uber and Lyft driving is a service and some drivers can do a good job and some won't.  The amount of tip should reflect that.   Am I the only person who thinks people are blowing this discussion to unnecessary levels?

  Right.  They can charge anything they want, which means no more deals.  Someone told me about the example of trips between Heathrow and London. You pretty much have no choice except a car service and maybe the train.  Well, they won't charge those friendly uberX prices for those.

  I can already see the stolen and abandoned vehicles in a pile in the back of a shady parking lot.

  they had the same problem with shared bicycles where people just tossed them all over the place.

  I will admit, I can never keep UberSUV and UberXL separate. I get the UberBlack and UberX.  That's easy.  but SUV and XL? Come on.  Call UberSUV a UberBlackXL or UberBlackSUV.  UberXL is...UberXXL?  No, wait.
