Ok since a few people have wondered about this:
How much does it cost to charge a scooter? Less than you might think. Just to run some rough numbers:
The scooter batteries' capacities are reported to be about 8800mAh at 36V. We can convert this to watt hours: 8800 * 36 / 1000 = 316.8Wh
Electricity costs on average of 12 cents per kilowatt hour (ie. 1000 watt hours) in the US. So, the cost of charging one of these scooters from empty is going to be something like:
(316.8 / 1000) * 12 = 4 cents
It's probably a bit more than that since chargers are not 100% efficient. And, the cost of electricity varies between different locations, so take this with a grain of salt. But it's safe to say the electricity cost of charging these things is not something to worry much about.
When I was a kid we would get these chain letters. In the snail mail (yes, I grew up before the internet) "Send $5 to this person, then mail this letter to 5 more people, and get rich!"
Amazing that people are still dumb enough to fall for schemes like this. I guess they are just blinded by dollar signs.
Welp, I guess some execs are gonna have to wait a little longer to buy those fancy new yachts. Poor, poor things.

One more thing: I'm tellin ya...
I think this is a little different than a congestion charge. I mean, if anything, higher prices will encourage MORE people to drive into the city on their own, not less. I doubt it will keep any Uber drivers or taxis off the road. Overall I doubt it will help with congestion much. Seems like just a way to raise money, which is not necessarily a bad thing if it at least helps make public transportation better...
Amazing that taxis are still cheaper than Uber in NYC. What an unusual place.
This guy is savage... he has some good points, but I think he's also wrong in some ways. He says "having more Uber users does not improve the service", but that's not true. Why do people use Uber over Lyft? Because it's more available, because more people use it, therefore more drivers driver for it. Simple as that. There is definitely a critical mass element to rideshare services.
"The app is not technically daunting". I'm gonna call BS on that too. He's comparing it to Facebook and Amazon. If Uber is not technically daunting, then neither are they. The truth is, all three of these services are conceptually simple, but have the same massive challenge: scale. They're not sending people to Mars, but making a rideshare work (or a social network for that matter) on a scale of millions of users per day -- in real time -- is a formidable technical challenge. Uber spends a lot on R+D.
But he's right when he says it doesn't create a competitive barrier. They can only compete on price, and there isn't much room left there.
A number of years ago in Denver I got picked up by an Uber driver in a pickup truck. I didn't know you could drive a pickup for Uber. Maybe that's changed since then. Anyways it was just a two seater so I had no choice but to sit in the front. Driver was a nice guy, if a little eccentric. Other than that I'm always a rear seat kind of guy. More room back there!
Ohh, I see. That is annoying... Glad you figured it out though!
I'm unclear on why it is accepting the request. You are just typing a text or something, and it's somehow accepting it?
I don't have any real solution to this in mind. Other than using a separate old phone for the apps so you can still text on your personal phone...
Does anyone know if this is still true?
You make a lot of great points here. There is a problem of implicit bias in humans. We all do it without even knowing it. Does it affect ratings? Yeah, I bet it does. I doubt this system is illegal in any way but I think there are real ethical issues with it, which of course Uber will never confront...
He is going to find that license later and feel very stupid... 😂

Self driving cars remind me a bit of flying cars back in the 50's/60's. Some guy made a flying car and everyone thought we were all going to be zipping around in them in 20 years.
But here we are 60+ years later and guess what, no flying cars. Turns out 20 years is not that long.
