This reminds me of the joke, "if you want to stop an AV from going anywhere, just draw a circle around it."
Living in the snow belt (Cleveland, OH) and seeing the issues we face in our road system almost daily, I've never doubted that we are many years away from having a truly self driving car. Admittedly it could be done (as the article points out) on specified routes, but as Uber drivers, we don't drive "specified routes"... that's left for public transportation systems to do that!
When I envision a snow where there's no visible lane markings, the snow is continuing to fall, visibility is reduced, traction is limited - there's simply NO WAY given the current technology that it can happen.
Right. There are too many corner use cases no one is talking about, like the snow. This is one of those things 90% isn't good enough.
Funny thing is that 100% of the people who drive KNOW this, but the world continues to believe this is happening tomorrow. Just because Google is doing it.
Cars and Ubers and such are considered the "last mile" to the destination. What brings together the largest distances are the main mode of public transportation such as airplanes, buses, trains, etc.
The irony is that the "last mile" is where the accidents are likely to occur and, I believe, the most difficult to automate. Why not start with Greyhound Buses for these auto-cars? Mostly Interstate driving.
You know why. Coming up with a next generation Peter Pan Bus doesn't sound nearly as cool. I am not even joking. Without the hype these tech companies cannot get investor funds.
Self driving cars remind me a bit of flying cars back in the 50's/60's. Some guy made a flying car and everyone thought we were all going to be zipping around in them in 20 years.
But here we are 60+ years later and guess what, no flying cars. Turns out 20 years is not that long.
As someone who lives in the north east, I am confident that there is no way in hell AVs are going to be tackling winters around here anytime soon.
That is one ugly carplane. I wouldn't be caught dead in it.
What's weird is even today there are a bunch of new companies making flying cars. But they seem barely more advanced than the one you pictured. I mean they are basically the same thing, and still nobody is going to use them. The future in flying cars is in automating them. Basically giant quad copters fully automated.
"Despite all the media hype..." This wraps up pretty much the whole thing.
Yes, snow is a great example. They can't even begin to handle snow right now. They can't even handle rain!
Yep, the voice of REASON!!!
and yet Richard Branson says space travel will be ready by Christmas 😜
