  This is SO true. It's people driving around other people for pay. Simple as that. 

  I find it funny that, I think people used to look down on taxi drivers a bit. But somehow rideshare drivers are hip and cool now. Shrug.

  Anonymity is the biggest thing I think. It's the same reason people lay all their problems on the bartender. (Well, that and alcohol.) I've had people lay some pretty heavy stuff on me in my car. At first it made me uncomfortable. I didn't know how to respond. Now I just go with it. I try to help sometimes but usually people aren't looking for a solution, they just want to vent.

  This is good service. Soliciting tips is, at some level, rude. Even if everyone's doing it. Even if some riders are ok with it. Some percentage of riders are always going to see it as rude (and I agree with them). You're doing it right.

  I mean you have to feel bad for a dude who commits suicide because of his medalliaon crashing... but come on. this is what happens when government regulates an industry, and then fails to prop it up when it is disrupted. Takeaaway here is don't invest in stuff that is only valueable because the government made it.

   5 years ago in  Uber self-driving car that killed pedestrian "decided" not to stop for her

  It sounds like their software was getting a lot of false positives on pedestrian sightings, so rather than make its detection software better, they decided to just raise the threshold of what the car considers a pedestrian.

  So... who is liable here? This sure seems like criminal negligence if you ask me...

  Hyperloop? Only if it is administered by the government...

  It depends how the privatization happens. A lot of public services are contracted out to private contractors, but that doesn't make them private. The govt is still in charge and can fire the contractor(s) if they don't perform to their expectations.

  I don't know specifically how the japan system works. A lot of rail systems have been privatized throughout the world.

  People diss on public transportation, but it's a public service. I doubt it will go away. One problem with rideshares is that as they become more popular, they become worse due to traffic. They shoot themselves in the foot.

  Until Uber opens up its own private subway through major cities, it ain't gonna happen.

  It's not blurry at all. Public transportation is provided by the government. That's what it is. There is no way you could call anything Uber public transportation.

  I really hate unions, but with the way things are for drivers nowadays this seems like a valid place for them. Tired of getting screwed over by Uber.
