Catch-22 problem accessing my Uber account

I have been living in Europe for several years, but can't get into my Uber account - here is my dilemna: 

I have a European phone number but the USA phone number associated with the account is no longer active. I have a new smart hone and had to do a fresh install of Uber. 

If I try to login with my new phone number, it will send a 4digit code to my european phone, but then flags my email address as already being use. If I instead log in via Facebook, the computer won't push the 4digit code to my phone, presumably because it doesn't match the phone number on my account. 

The usual method of changing your phone numbe in settings assumes you can login .. 

Any thoughts on how to resolve this?

    if I was in your shoes I would probably just make a new account with a new email... getting through to uber customer service seems like it would probably be impossible.

    That is a conundrum... Are you able to login via facebook on the website at www.uber.com? I logged in using google just now and it did not require a verification code.

    However, I can't see where you can change your phone number via the website, so even that might not help you.
