How does Lyft detect phone numbers created with the Burner app?
The Guru Take
Free phone number apps such as Burner and Google Voice use public APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) in order to get access to their phone numbers. One such API is http://ap.bandwidth.com. There are services available to determine which company services a particular phone number; you can even try this yourself at sites such as http://www.phonevalidator.com.
While we can't be certain exactly what checks Lyft uses, it is likely that they are simply using a service such as this to determine which numbers are legitimate cell phone numbers.
