I am not a new driver and I have gotten these fees before. I noticed that the trip that was cancelled a few days ago didn't get my the cancellation fees, and upon checking my history, I am suspecting some others where I didn't get the fee either.
What's going on? Is Uber being shady again?
Were you late? Were you making progress? A few possible reasons you didn't receive the cancellation fee.
As you know, the cancellations are assessed when the passenger-to-be cancels after 2 minutes (or 1 miunte for UberPool) after you, the driver, has accepted the trip. This is to compensate you for the time and expense lost for responding to the request. This fee varies on which service you drive for and which city you are in. It can be a flat-rate, limited by a maximum number, and be based on time & distance.
If you did not receive the cancellation fee even though it was after 2 minutes, this can be due to the following possibilities:
- If you were late. If you were late by more than 5 minutes from the ETA determined by the GPS. This is the time that is set when the ride is accepted.
- If you weren't making "progress" towards the customer. If Uber detects that the driver isn't actively making his or her way to the location, the cancellation fee will be waived for the user.
- Other account issues.
If you think that a cancellation fee should have been charged but was not, you can request it be reviewed by Uber. (Click here for the form.)

I have had the same problem with Uber not responding when I should have received a cancellation fee.
My problem occurred when I was on an UberExpress trip. I waited two minutes for the passenger.
Uber sent a message stating, "if the passenger is not there, you may cancel."
I did and went to the next pickup. Apparently the late passenger complained to Uber and the fee was refunded. I know this because on the trip report I had money from the second passenger but a zero paid on the first.
I wrote Uber and they asked me the for the passenger's name and his destination. I had 21 trips that day and I couldn't remember the name. I certainly wouldn't know the destination.
I told them the time and the fact that I had zero paid on the trip. They should be able to find that pretty easy.
I finally gave up, it wasn't worth the $3.75.
By the way, in Philadelphia the rider is charged $5.00 on a cancellation and Uber takes $1.25.
