Can this be true?  I thought the whole point of the cancellation fees was to compensate the drivers for their trouble?!!

Dirty dirty business they run.  Then again I am one of their most loyal customers.  Hate Lyft.

Actually, Uber does compensate the driver

Uber's rider cancellation fee does go to the driver.   Uber says, 

"Cancellation fees are charged to compensate drivers for time invested in traveling to a rider's pickup location."

However, the Uber Fee does apply to this transaction.

Now, why is there a rumor out there?  It is most likely because the policy, such as the fee amount and rules on enforcement have changed in its history.  A few additional data points:

  • There is a strong claim by the driver community that Uber was not passing on any or all cancellation feels when the fees were implemented originally.  (Uber's primary goal was to discourage riders from cancelling and was not so much to compensate the drivers.)
  • There seem to be many drivers who claim they often do not see the cancellation fees come through, even though they know the riders were charged them.  Some keen drivers claimed to have cros-checked and found this out.  (The tricky thing is that with the rules changing often, it is difficult for drivers to to verify.  Was the rider really charged the cancellation fee?)
