I may get a bigger vehicle (for my family) and I could also start driving for xl instead of x but curious if it is worth it? Do you get a lot of pings? Are people traveling in groups with the pandemic? Does the extra $$ make up for the added gas expense?

You will still get a lot of pings right now, especially as Uber has lowered the amount of people in a car with the pandemic. I find a lot of people need UberXL these days just to fit a normal family or group of friends.
I would say it is worth it so long as you get a relatively cheap vehicle. Keep in mind UberXL is mainly used as a college bus (low tips) and airports trips with tons of suitcases being piled in your trunk.
