One time I picked up this dude near a hotel by Twin River Casino. He asked me how much cash I had. "Uh oh" I thought to myself.
Then he said "If you give me all of your cash, I will give you the same exact amount in the app. You get to keep all of the tip, right?"
Gambling problem? Yep. I declined and explained to him that we have to pay tax on tip, so it wouldn't work out in the end.
This wouldn't work anyways. There is a limit to how much you can tip at a time. Even the custom field has a limit, and it isn't high.
I never imagined that this was a "thing" until I became an Uber driver. How the drivers are invited by the riders to join them on things. Used to think they were weird, but no longer.
This happens mostly in affluent areas. It must be a rich people thing to do. I have joined people's parties, open house, this dude closing on a house, cake-tasting, etc. et.
One memorable one was last month. It was a ride where I drove a mom and a 7 year old to her friend's birthday party. I was asking her about the party that she apparently helped plan, and at the end of the ride, she asked me to join her. I looked to the mom, perhaps hoping she'd get me off the hook, but she gave the, "Yeah, why not? Why don't you come join?" The party had an entire gaggle of kids, maybe 50? and It had not one but TWO bouncy houses, star wars characters on stilts, all-you-can-eat taco bar, where I spent most of my time, and four additi…

What really got to me was that the party had these cards that had the schedule printed on them. Multiple events through the day, and there were multiple stations that you choose to attend at different times. They had arts table, clowns, magicians, dance lessons, etc. Each event would be the highlight of a normal kid's birthday party. and each kid got to take home their creation, and it looked like each kid got a gift on the way out. (though I didn't stay long enough to witness that. For all I know, there was some surprise grand finale where Katy Perry would jump out of a cake or something. I felt too weird to stay.
Honestly, this reminded me one of those year-end graduation parties from Billy Madison.
As a driver, I drive the poor and the rich. Every day is a learning and cultural experience for me. I am telling you. Imagine those people who've been driving taxis for 25 years. I bet you, they have seen everything.

I assume you are not a driver. There are so many of these requests that are commonsense to us drivers, but when we share these with normal non-driving friends, they are often surprised. We have so many stories.
For example, we drive drug dealers and prostitutes way more than a normal person realizes. Like a lot. Once I dropped a girl off at this house and then later picked her up in a few hours. Oh, we know who they are. These people love Ubers not only for the convenience but also because it leaves no tracks in the eyes of the law.
This is when I was still driving a taxi, but I had this one couple who tried to pay me in songs. The guy had a guitar and she sang the songs. They even made the song about me after asking a few questions. I really really really wish I had a recording of it. It was wonderful and a fond memory from the days I drove in NYC.
I take it it was before the days of smartphones?
"Just drive me around, anywhere, for an hour, then bring me back" Odd bloke...
"I know I requested you take me to XXXXX. Can you take me there, complete the trip, but then take me to YYYY and I pay you cash?"
I get variations of this question maybe every few months? I assume these are people who want to cover their tracks. Like a cheating spouse or a kid who needs to shake off their parents' grasp.
We drivers know all the secrets of people.
Uber has started allowing kids to pay via their campus card so for those kids who are on mommy and daddys credit card the parents will jsut see funds being uploaded to the campus card but then the kids will use that money for uber rides. Uber is in on this little game...
I don't know if this is a surprise to you, but drivers (and I assume I am not unique) get a lot of mid-night drive-through requests.
Yes, we get calls in middle of the night, it doesn't matter which days, say 3AM, where we get a request, and the guy says, "Can you just take me to McDonald's drive-through and bring me back?"
When I started driving, I thought it was weird, but it became so regular that I no longer blink twice.
I get those too. I noticed that it heavily depends on when and where you drive. I guess that's obvious, huh. Late night on weekends. and by "late", I mean like 3 to 5AM.
It's usually people drunk or high, but not the rowdy durnks. It's more like the "we stopped drinking a while ago and now we need food" crowd.
I know because I used to be them. ha!
