It all depends on how many hours you put into it for how much you make. Many drivers love to complain about low earnings but I bet you could take home about $20 per hour if you were smart about when you drove (peak times!) and where you drove (near the campus and bars!). In the beginning it might take you a little to figure out what works best in your town but once you do I think it would be worth it.
I worry you are right though that they will do something to counter act this like lowering rates even further.
Maybe they should make all riders go through background checks too and drivers would feel more comfortable picking people up from rough neighborhoods

Not trying to be mean here but I think you are being a little too sensitive. Your husband is trying to provide for your family, driving is not fun especially when you have to get back in your car after already working all day. Have you tried to talking to him about this? I don't know your husband but I would think this might be all in your head.

Wow this is really interesting stuff. It is incredible in a way how Uber has managed to capture so many workers and give them this odd mentality of not needing to think at all for this type of job to make money - which is just not true. How do they get so many people to do their work for them and not think it through?! I am also curious if those veteran drivers started using smarter driving techniques in the beginning of their driving days or have learned them slowly. In other words will the newbie drivers get to that point too if they don't quit? or is the reason these drivers are veteran is because they started out driving smart?
LOL re: pretty soon they will ask us to pay to drive for them. I wouldn't put it past them. They will find some sneaky way to make it seem like it is worth it. Perhaps a "special driver badge" for $29.99 a month that gives you certain advantages over other drivers but when you do the math you actually lose money. Yep, I bet that will happen.

I would explain the situation to your passengers up front and ask for the $20 ferry cost before you start driving. If they do not pay then say that you will have to take a different route that does not go on the ferry. This is definitely an annoying situation that Uber should rectify. Have you tried to talk to an Uber personnel from the US (not the Philippines)?
the main problem with this campaign is that people can just steal Uber rides.

Most companies won't give you a discount, though Lyft does have a new loyalty program in some markets that might save you some money!
You can also try contacting some smaller companies to see if they would be willing to work out a deal with you.

I dont think this is all that common, disclosure depends on the state. Most drivers have their dashcams right out in the open.
