All you need to do is ask!
Hi, Nicole,
You are allowed to change your destination as well as your route at any point. The price will be reflected according to your changes, based on duration and distance (like a regular taxi). Note that such change will impact the guranteed pricing, i.e. initially quoted fare.
To make changes, you can adjust the desteination on the Uber app OR directly instruct the driver. Easy-peasy.

Just keep in mind that while you can change your route for Uber X, XL, SUV, Black, etc, you cannot change your route for an Uber Pool trip as the route is predetermined to pick up other passengers!
Is it me or it's extremely frustrating that you have to enter the destination before you can dispatch an Uber? I am not sure how I feel about this. They should pick me up regardless of where I am going. Isn't that the law? ...oh, right, this isn't a taxi. There are no laws for Uber.
I change my route all the time.
In fact, the driver doesn't follow the route suggested either. They try to take the best route for you. GPS isn't always the most accurate.
