Is this true? Has anyone in New York City experienced upfront pricing before? It seems like a good idea, but if taxis are more expensive than a rideshare like Uber. what is the point?

The option of negotiating an upfront flat rate has always been available with taxis. You just have to ask. Car service has always existed and they charge by flat rate also. Nothing new. I've done both for the past 20+ years in Orlando. But, in New York, if you hail the cab, they have to use meter, if you call, they give you a flat rate. So, some bigger cities are different because of strict regulations.

well, yea. one is regulated by the government and the other can do whatever they want.

I just envision the cabs opening the Uber app, calculating the fare, turning around to the passenger and telling them the cost, lol

one time I was traveling in Boston and the taxi driver offered for me to pay an upfront price of $15 for the trip, OR let the meter run.

Good thing i knew the city, so I told him to let the meter run. The trip was only $7! seems like a scam to me.

I take taxis daily in Manhattan, and I have never seen an upfront pricing.  Then again, I hail, get on, pay and get out.  I am not sure where it would even be displayed though.
