What happens if I start driving for Uber with a car JUST new enough to qualify? Do I have to get a newer car later when they raise the bar?

My grandson is about to apply to drive for Uber.... and that involves him buying a car no older than 2009

That's just new enough to drive for Uber.

My concern and question is what happens to him next year or two or three years later when Uber changes/revises the maximum car age permitted for new Uber applicants?

Would he no longer be permitted to drive without buying a newer car? Or is it sort of "once your car is approved it's good as long as it meets other criteria such as inspections, insurance, etc?"

This is a serious concern.

Would much appreciate any response..

I'd ask Uber  directly but there is no way to contact them if I'm neither an Uber passenger or driver

Generally can vary by local city government code.  I would suggest you spend a little time doing some research to see if your local government has a standard for Rideshare and Taxi's.  And yes, when the car hits 15 years (assuming that is acceptable in your market area) you would receive a notice that your car no longer meets the TOS (TERMS OF SERVICE AGREEMENT) he agreed to when signing up and ultimately he would have to replace the car.  Admittedly Uber might not catch it until the last minute (or thereafter) but eventually it will happen.

I can only tell you what I read on a few forums. People had cars that were going to age out older than 15 two months prior they still had no notice. One of my cars will age out in Dec or January if I hear anything I will be happy to fill you in. So far so good but i still have 7 or 8 mths left. I've also heard its not Uber's rule about age but the city or state. Again I've just read this in forums. I just looked it up although outdated. These laws were set in 2016 most are different now. Legislature in PA says the cars cannot be older than 10 yrs old and 12 yrs if something or other (cant remember that part lol). So it looks like it was a state law on the year. Although Uber changed it approx  15 mths ago to 15 yrs. Unless PA changed it to 15 then Uber changed. So it does look like the state has something to do with it. Again what i am posting here i read in ride share websites with posts from other drivers. The year of car i found on PA government website. Although i…

It looks like rhey threw a bunch of laws together at the last min just to have something legal because quite a few are not followed.

Yeah he won't be able to continue driving if they update the requirements to a newer year. Otherwise there would be some super old cars driving for Uber.

Sorry since I'm sure that's not the answer you were hoping for.

Thanks for your response. It's helpful.

(Actually... I didn't want any particular response. I just want him to know the reality, whatever it is... not get blindsided by it after, say, driving Uber for only a year with his newly purchased 2009 car.)

I figured there would be SOME point at which Uber says "your car is too old now" to an existing driver.

But what I'm still not clear on from your answer is  this:

Does Uber raise the bar every year? Every two years? Unpredictably?

And if so, do existing drivers get even a bit of slack.... like maybe have a year to update their car? Or do they just get a notice saying "prove your car is less than X years old or we're kicking you out?"

Uber raises the bar every year. It would be in his best interest to purchase a vehicle that will provide him with at least a few years of rideshare service. That way he can put money away for his next car, if he chooses to continue with uber.

As loretta said it's every year. I have not heard of anyone getting slack from Uber; the requirements are firm.

Uber knows what car we all drive. I have not run into this situation so I can only speculate, but I presume if my car was going to become out of date with new requirements, I'd get a notice from Uber basically saying I need to get a new car in order to keep driving for them.

This is a really fascinating question that I have never contemplated before. I tend to agree with the other posters that Uber would reach out to you to get a newer car but seeing how Uber is not the most organized company your grandson may get away with driving his older model for longer than expected.

Also, what an awesome Grandmother you are to be helping him out!
