Tesla Taxi NYC

Tesla is one of the most talked about cars and companies in the industry right now. They are revolutionizing how people get around in their daily lives. It was only a matter of time before Tesla and the classic NYC Yellow Cab collaborated.

New York City has, arguably, the most iconic and recognizable taxi fleet in the world. With a cap on how many taxis can legally operate in the city and strict laws and regulations, there is not a lot of variance between the cars used. Tesla’s Model 3 has recently been approved to be the very first completely electric car by the city’s Taxi and Limousine Commission. Though, there is not a Tesla currently operating as a taxi in New York City, it could happen soon. Someone will have to purchase a medallion and then choose to use a Tesla.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has been working to make Tesla as efficient and affordable as possible in order to make them accessible to people for a better planet. He has been put on record, stating there will be a million robo-taxis by 2020. Whether this is possible or not is still unclear. New York’s approval of Tesla as a taxicab could be the seal of approval for the company needs, and it could be viewed as a stepping stone into the taxi market.

Teslas has been used as taxi and rideshare vehicles in the past. However, this is the the first time a Tesla will be joining New York’s iconic ranks and outfitted with the signature yellow and black markings. There have been other cities and fleets to use Teslas in their ranks for several years. In 2014, Quebec City acquired a Tesla taxi, which had over 100,000 miles within its first two years of service. In 2018, Columbus, Ohio saw ten Tesla Model 3s enter a company’s fleet for public use.

Are there any incentives or subsidies available for taxi drivers who choose to switch to electric vehicles? smash karts asks.
