Am I supposed to pay cash for tolls on an Uber?
The Guru Take
No, do not pay cash for bridge and tunnel tolls.
No, do not pay cash for your tolls. It could be a scam attempted by your driver.
The tolls are automatically included in your fare and will be charged to your credit card on file. You are also not responsible for the tolls on a return trip. (Regardless of what your driver tells you.)
(Exception: There are some Uber services that accept cash payments. In this case, yes, tolls should also be paid using cash.)

To ippei and Chelly: Not necessarily a driver scam. We Uber/Lyft drivers in upstate New York had to literally beg/ask our customers to pay the fare for the ferry to Vermont and back or we were out of pocket Twenty-Five dollars. I reported this to Uber and Lyft so many times and their standard answer was: there is no Champlain Ferry or we cannot find any ferry in our system. So, do not be so quick to judge us drivers, we may actually be legitimate in asking customers to pay for fair compensation. Do your due diligence before accusing everybody of being scoundrels. Thank You.
Oh, wow, thanks for this info. I never though about this driver scam before.
