Personally, I go with the flow, an experienced driver will know when to talk and when to shut up and drive
Most drivers will say hello, how was your day or how are you? If you give them brief answers they will most likely leave you alone. They pick up on you want no conversation. If not just simply say " i've had a rough day looking forward to a quiet ride. I have some work to do dont mean to be rude and not chat. My favorite I would love to have a quiet ride, short and honest. Or lie "I am putting my headphones on to listen to some music didnt want you to think I am ignoring you". Personally I would rather rider just be honest takes the guessing out for the driver and you get what you want. Nothing wrong with being honest and direct. At least greet the driver and tell them to have a nice day at end of ride. There are some drivers that dont like to talk and prefer no conversation.
