In wake of the NJ girl murdered in SC they wanted to pass a Bill for drivers to have light up signs for Uber and Lyft. Big mistake, false sense of security. Anyone can buy Uber and Lyft signs on E Bay, Amazon, etc... Bill failed to pass. Now they want drivers to make their own front license plate. SC has license plates on back of their cars. They stated, it would cost the state too much money to make plates for front and back of car. It would also cause other issues. Now they want drivers to make their own license plate and put it on the front of their car. Are they serious? Why cant the rider take the extra 5 steps to check back of car? Are riders that lazy? Riders have drivers name, pic, color, make, and model. They can see us pull up in the app. WTH more do they want? Should drivers show riders their drivers license, birth certificate, and social security number? This is getting so ridiculous. My heart goes out to that young girls family and friends and I hate to bring this up after what happened. BUT This was not Ubers fault and not the drivers fault. It was the guy who murdered her the criminal piece of shit who should hang for his crime. Now this is what I hate to bring up. She did not check any info in her app about her ride. Did she deserve to die, of course not. There are many safety features including a 911 feature provided. Where were her friends that she went out with? It only seems logical she had too much to drink. This is so common among young people and people out drinking they dont look, they dont know anything about the app other than to order the Uber. I guarantee most never read the TOS.

What about the drivers safety?  No one cares about the drive…

What about the drivers safety?  No one cares about the drivers. Drivers have been beaten, their car damaged, and a pregnant woman was murdered and the baby died. Where is the politicians, Uber, Lyft in these situations. We know nothing about our riders other than a first name and most times its made up. I have received requests for "B, Jesus C., DickSwallower" their are many other BS names on the app. Now they want us to "say my name" that is our only safety net which isnt much. RIDERS DONT BE LAZY AND IRRESPONSIBLE. READ THE TOS, KNOW WHAT TO LOOK FOR, KNOW WHERE THE 911 FEATURE IS, DRINK RESPONSIBLY, SHARE YOUR TRIP, CALL A FRIEND OR FAMILY MEMBER  WHILE IN YOUR UBER, CALL THE DRIVER WHEN THEY PULL UP IF THEIR PHONE RINGS ITS THE RIGHT DRIVER. what the hell more do you want? It's time to grow up and act like an adult.  Minors are not supposed to be taking Uber by themselves so these are ADULTS ordering and taking rideshare.  Act like an adult and be responsible. Dont let what happen to this girl happen to you.

It's another great example of laws being passed and changed implemented by lawmakers who have ZERO knowledge of how it all works!!!

Folks this horrible tragedy was completely avoidable.  If that sweet gal that lost her life had ONLY checked the license plate and car model....  we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Having a "sign" or "light" means NOTHING - that's the FIRST thing the bad guys will get - order them on Ebay 7 days a week!

Agreed Wes. I drive in the area that she is from. It was a little to close to home and having 4 kids myself (1 21 yr old daughter) I couldnt even imagine losing one of them. When it first happened I thought it was terrible that drivers were complaining. After seeing both sides of it I can see & understand the frustration. This really was unfortunate as it was something so simple that couldve prevented this. Uber is guility of many things but not this. Drivers are out there all the time with no protection whatsoever. Weapons, mace, etc  isnt even helpful unless you manage to get out of the car. We are seatbelted in, closed sm. area, operating a motor vehicle, riders are behind us. They obviously have the upper hand. Instead of speaking to drivers who are the ones out there on the road & have the answers they just go off coming up with awful ideas.  When I heard what they wanted to do I actually emailed the politicians in SC telling them they were going to make it more…

Jersey City was thinking of doing the same. I emailed the person who published that article. I emailed Uber about using a code or password (as you know that was pointless). I obviously know none of what I had to say in the emails to any of them would ever be read let alone addressed. Just knowing my daughter was this young ladies age just really hit home. I felt I had to try something. Just happy they finally seen the light (no pun intended) and changed their minds. Now they want drivers to make their own license plates for front of car. Maybe we should get into the license plate making business. Cant get rich driving maybe hope in selling license plates:) lol It amazes me how they want "to help" but if they make it mandatory that all drivers have state issued front and back plates "it will cost too much money". I know here in PA we pay for our license plate. Maybe in SC they get them free. This is a big mess. All it does is cause more tension, aggravation, hostility between riders and drivers. Cancel fees, wasted time on both ends, arguements, and low ratings. Meanwhile Uber gets their money and the politicians look like they gave a crap and did something. So annoying.

If I could have upvoted your post again, I would have.

Whats sad is that these lawmakers think that they're improving safety, but in reality, they're just making things worse.  Not only is a lighted sign easily obtained by anyone on Amazon or eBay, but the biggest flaw is that THIS ENCOURAGES PEOPLE TO "VERIFY" THEIR RIDE BASED ON A SIGN.  People need to verify license plate numbers, NOT signs.

I have paranoid passengers on occassion, and I'm a 60+ disabled great grandmother!  If they're too afraid of me, they just need to play it extra safe and drive themselves.

I don't play the "what's my name" game.  People tell me their name, or the timer ticks down and I collect the NO SHOW fee after 5 minutes.  My safety comes before name games.
