How do I recognize my driver? Any tips?
The Guru Take
Car Type, License Plate, a sign on dash, car color, driver's face, etc.
You've downloaded the app, you have an account, you called an Uber (or another rideshare sevice). Now, as the car approaches what do you do?
Keep your app open!
Not only can you see the driver approaching on your app, this will enable drivers to see your phone's GPS location. (Note: in the recent update, Uber's app now can see your location even if Uber's app is in the background. FYI) This will enable the driver to approach your exact location!
Identify the Driver / Vehicle!
In your Uber app, you will find many details about the driver that can help you.
- Car Type / Color
- License Plate (helps when on front of vehicle)
- Driver's Profile Pic
- Sign on the Dash ("U" or "Lyft")
Some signs light up in different colors, indicated on your app. (Say pink screen matches up with pink sign) Neat, huh?
Of course, when entering the vehicle, always make sure it's the right driver!

Riders are able to use a light on their phone. Lets use "blue" as an example. Riders screen lights up blue driver receives text that tells them which color to look for. I assume Uber chooses the color in the event there are multiple pick ups. This way 2/3 people dont have same color at same location. I've had riders text me describing where they are or what they have on. For example I have pickups at Philadelphia Mills Mall (aka Franklin Mills Mall) Uber notoriously sends drivers to wrong pick up location. Some riders know this and will send a text where they are (using a landmark or enterance) Uber's app is awful in apartment complexes, malls, hospitals, strip malls. Many drivers get frustrated and cancel. Equally frustrating for both. Although these suggestions are more for driver to find you once you are connected at pick up, you can confirm the type of car, license plate, and pic to confirm. I also use my hazzards (flashers) as I pull up. Not all drivers do this …

I get texting/ calling can be annoying also to both but it can save a lot of aggravation in the end. Some drivers complain they cant see the text while driving or its dangerous. My answer to that is when you are at red light check it or if having trouble with pick up then view text. If the rider calls your device should be mounted all you need to do is press button. I much rather view a text or get a call than have a troublesome pick up, make the rider wait in inclement weather, or late at night.

wait, what. I never knew this. Never.
I don't think I've even see colors in my app before. I will look tonight.
Make sure you update the app if you havent done so since before summer. I believe you will not be able to see it unless you update. It rolled out around the time of new driver app. I wish more riders used it. Big help in dark areas or crowded places. Not every city has it. I am in Philadelphia. Not sure what other cities have it.
Update
I am not talking about the "Beacon Light" that drivers have on their dash similar to Lyft. What is here in Philly is Uber assigns rider a color or rider picks color not sure which. Once color is determined (I'll use blue). Driver gets a text that says "Rider has blue light" or something similar to that wording. Rider's screen emits a blue light and then holds it up. As driver approaches they can see the phone/light. Only seen it 2X so far.

On the bottom corner of drivers windshield will be an Uber logo that will light up with the color rider selected. I was unable to find what cities they are testing this in.

There was a similar post here. More and more cars are starting to have their "dash lights."
Guru answer coming soon.

I have yet to see one of them lights. I get excited and look for them every time. After 30 rides in NYC, I still haven't seen one.
Do drivers have to buy those light up toys? I want one. no, I am not a driver. I want it for decor
