Hi,
Not sure if other drivers are blowing through phone mounts as frequently as I did, so I decided to post my solution here.
The holders with jaws only had a limited life span, as eventually the jaws kept breaking off. These mounts also required me to use both hands to remove and place the phone back in, unsafe when doing it at 70 mph.
Bought a magnetic vent holder. While it solved my two hand struggle, the mount itself started falling out of the vent, positioning in the vent was too low for me, as I like my phone screen to be at eye level and it blocked vent air flow, also phone kept creeping down and occasiaonlly falling off on big enough road bumps.
So this weekend I combined the two holders together to solve my challenges by affixing the magnetic mount to the face plate of my window mount holder, see picture on the below link.
The window mount has bottom support for the phone which prevents phone creep on bumps and magnet now allows one hand operation.

See, these things break when you take your phone off and on the holder. I just leave my iPad on it the whole time, and I don’t have an issue.
Yes, I do have my phone with me, but I leave it on the seat or my pocket. The calls and texts from riders do come to my iPhone and not the iPad. It works great.
While I agree, most of us cannot leave our phone or ipad in the car. People would break in pretty quick if I left it in there.
Good call on the iPad though. I would take that out less than I would a phone.
I blow through one every month. I don’t learn and keep buying crappy ones on Amazon for $9.99. It’s usually the plastic part that attaches to the clamps that grab onto the AC vent that breaks.
I honestly have a box full of half broken phone mounts in my office at home.
No, those magnet things don’t work. Not putting my $1000 iPhones on it.
Rig up what I show on my picture, you will be surprised :) Especially that you already have a bunch of parts to do so laying around. In my setup I actually have enough room on the plastic face plate to affix a second round magnet but that may be too strong of a magnet. So far I am very happy with this rig:)
Anytime my original old mounts use to break I would run to nearby Burlington, Marshalls, TJ Maxx to pick one up in a hurry so I could finish off the day
Hey you could make the mounts and sell them.
Second magnet. genius. thanks for sharing.
I use a magnetic CD slot mount for my 10.1" Samsung Galaxy Tab. Holds like a champ, doesn't sag, and has never fallen off even after running over potholes that almost swallow my car.
seems like the magnet type is pretty dominant these days. who knew.
my iPhone doesn't charge well through wireless pads when I got magnets in the case. bummer.
Yeah I like the wireless charging in the car. But plugging a wire in is not a big deal I guess.
So your mount inserts into a CD slot? as in you can no longer use CD player?
Post a pic of your mount if you can please
Mine is no longer sold on Amazon, but it's similar to this one:
https://www.amazon.com/Magnetic-Universal-APPS2CAR-Universally-Compatible/dp/B06Y42RKPF/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1538512955&sr=8-15&keywords=magnetic+cd+car+mount
It works great as long as you don't need to play CDs.
Thanks for sharing, wow it has 6 magnets vs. 4 in my round one. Not too hard to remove phone off? And you are not ripping the holder out of CD drive when pulling on phone.
i see they recommend affixing metal backing between phone and case probably so the pull in the magnet is not so strong.
on my Mazda 6 the CD drive is under the AC off button like on this pic, which would be toooo low for me to have phone

But good to know there are such holders
Who uses a CD player on the car anymore? No offense. :)
I got the arm one that permanently attaches to the metal seat frame
Something like this.
Are you able to take your phone in and off with one hand from his setup?
I have been using my rig for about 2-3 weeks now and is very convenient for one hand operation
It is sturdy as I have it attached to the metal rail beneath my seat. However I will admit, when I try to yank the phone off with one hand, the arm bends and is annoying.
I’d like to say I don’t take it off often, but I do. I have headsets and all, but I type much faster when the phone is actually in my hand. Plus I play games between fares.
This is actually brilliant. Magnet to hold the phone in place. Bottom supports to stop it falling down. I have been scared of the magnet ones because I don't want my phone to keep falling off. Might have to try this.
