Mind boggling. Of course I knew there were a lot, but that's a really big number. And lots of extra congestion.
There were 100K Uber and Lyft rides in Boston last year

100K does sound like a lot, but isn't this one of those psycholoical phenomenon where we all believe the world is smaller than it really is?

To put Boston into perspective, Central Artery and Zakim Bridge (i.e. Big Dig) is designed to handle 245,000 vehicles every day. There are 690,000 people living in Boston, 4.6M in Greater Boston Metro. Almost 1.3M people take the MBTA buses, subways, commuter rails and ferries. Is 100K a lot?
Well, yeah, 100K Uber and Lyft rides still do feel pretty big number. OK, it passes my test.

wow - please provide me with more of these! such mindless reading.
1.3M people take the T out of 4.6M people who live there? That's nuts. Oh, I guess each person can take the T multiple times. still.
If those people had all taken public transportation... imagine it. Oh wait, I don't have to, I can just remember 5 years ago before rideshares were a thing, and traffic was more manageable.
I wish we had the data on the ride start/endpoints. I would love to see how they correlate to public transit locations.
Wow, 100K a day! That's 70 requestes a minute, when flattened out, definitely way more during the day or busy times. Crazy. I can't imagine that a pickup is literally happening every second. the city doesn't seem that big to me. (I drive in Boston.)
It's a big number, but extra congestion? Nah. Those people would have taken taxis or driven themselves in the past.
