Will I be charged for the distance traveled by the driver to come pick me up?
The Guru Take
Not usually. Uber experimenting with long pickups.
No, in overwhelming majority of the cases, you will not be charged for the trip drivers make to get to your location for pickup. The charges will only be incurred from the time of the pickup and the actual drive to your destination. Once you are picked up, you will owe the base charge (i.e. "flagdrop") or minimum fee, and after that, you pay for the distance and duration driven.
There are a few exceptions.
- Cancellation Fee: If you cancel a ride before the pickup, you can be charged a flat-rate cancellation fee. How do I cancel an Uber ride? When do cancellation fees apply? (Rider's Perspective)
- Long Pickupf Fee: This is something Uber is rolling out in limited cities where, if a pickup takes more than a certain amount of time, you will start to be charged the distance driven by the driver to arrive at your location. In most cases, the clock does not start until 8 to 10 minutes in to the drive. What are Long Pickup Fees by Uber? When does it apply?

Long pickup fees are scary and unfair for riders. I will never know how far the drivers who accept my requests are. The app shows how long the estimated wait time is but it doesn't know for sure until I actually submit the request.
This means that the app may say 5 minutes, but if someone from 10 minutes away accepts, I can get screwed with pickup fees.
You can always cancel when you realize they are super faraway. In fact, I think many riders do that when they are too far away. Go look on Lyft. LOL.
No cancellation fee for 2 or 5 minutes.
Valid point, but I feel like I should be warned. I do'nt like it how it gives me no choice. The guru above says 8 to 10 minutes, but it's vague and it only applies in certain cities. So how will I ever know?
wait, does it warn me?
No, the app doesn't warn you for the time being. Perhaps Uber should implement that.
As a driver I know we get screwed because they don’t pay worth a crap. 10 miles to drive to someone sometimes and then take the ride 5 miles lucky to get 5 dollars for that ride. With the pandemic not worth the risk they wonder why such a driver shortage. Being an xl driver more not worth it. Pay drivers better we’re using our personal car and have to pay for upkeep and gas and don’t get reimbursed on any of that. What all drivers need to do is go on strike no reason Uber should be making 25% on each trip and taking that away from the driver.
