How to Split your Rideshare Fare

Whenever you go somewhere with your friends and take an Uber or Lyft, one person typically has to request and pay for the ride, hoping their friends pay them back eventually.

Did you know that popular rideshare services Uber and Lyft contain a feature that allows you to split a fare evenly between you and your friends?!

Here’s how to facilitate an even fare split on Uber and Lyft!

Uber

  1. Request a ride through your Uber application
  2. Tap the arrow by the driver’s name
  3. Click on the “Split Fare” button, and type in your fellow rider’s names from your contact list
  4. Riders will get links to open the Uber app, and sign up if they don’t already have an account
  5. Uber will automatically split the fare evenly between the number of riders
  6. Each rider will get a separate receipt from Uber sent to their respective emails

In order to split your ride, the steps need to be completed before the ride is over. If it is not completed in time, the original requester will pay the entirety of the fare. This service is not available for all Uber services, for example, you cannot split the fare through an UberPool. Another caveat to using the split fare feature is that each participating rider will be charged a 25 cent split charge fee.

Lyft

  1. Request a ride through your Lyft application
  2. Open the ride options menu
  3. Tap “Split Fare”, and select up to 5 friends from your contact list
  4. After they accept, the fare will be split evenly automatically

The Lyft split rides feature is strikingly similar to Uber’s. Lyft even has the same 25 cent fee when you split your ride.

The next time you take an Uber or Lyft, don't waste time worrying about how much your friends owe you, just simply request a split fare, sit back, and enjoy your ride!
